As I look back and reflect on the past few weeks, I am overwhelmed with gratitude. I feel like I have grown immensely in the past few weeks both as a person and as a student. Getting to witness the Olympic Games first hand was an experience I will never forget. While I learned so much through our amazing guest speakers and lectures, I really want to reflect on what I learned outside of that. Prior to this experience, I had never visited France before. I had anticipated that navigating the city of Paris would be difficult due to the fact I do not speak French. I was pleasantly surprised at how all of the signs across the city, both Olympic and non-Olympic related, were easy to read and navigate. One thing I was concerned about ahead of the trip was how well restaurants in Paris would respond to food allergies. To be transparent, my allergies played a major role in deciding if I would be able to pursue this opportunity and live in Paris for a few weeks. As someone who has lived with allergies for close to twenty years, I know how to stress its severity to restaurants in America. However, the language barrier worried me when trying to decide if I would be able to come on this trip safely. After much thought I obviously decided to come on the trip, but I still had fear. When I went out to eat for my first meal in Paris, I was so relieved with how accommodating the restaurant was to my needs. Thankfully, this continued with most other restaurants for the entirety of the trip. For most of my life I have been worried to travel to countries where English is not their primary language due to my allergies. However, this trip gave me a lot of relief. Though it might seem silly to some, I have found a new excitement to travel to new countries due to the way I was treated in Paris. I also learned so much by talking to locals in the city and those who traveled from other countries to come to the games. For example, I was fortunate enough to attend the women’s football final match against Brazil, which can be seen in the below photo. While the stadium had an overwhelming about of American fans, there was an equal amount of fans visiting from Brazil. In fact, majority of the fans sitting around me were from Brazil. This was an amazing opportunity to talk with visitors who also traveled long distances to be in Paris for the Games. Overall, I am so glad I got to attend this experience. I made memories, met people, and learned lessons that I will remember for the rest of my life. I look forward to hopefully attending another Olympic Games in the future!

Final Days in Paris
As I leave Paris today, I wanted to reflect on the last few days I had here! These past few days I was fortunate enough to go to three different events. The first event I attended was the semi-finals for beach volleyball. This has been my dream event to attend due to the fact that the stadium is right next to the Eiffel Tower (see picture below!) Getting to watch both a women’s match and a men’s match while the sun was setting and eventually seeing the Eiffel Tower sparkle was definitely a highlight of the entire trip. The next day I had the opportunity to watch the semi-finals for women’s basketball. This game was especially exciting since the USA was playing in it! The energy in the arena was amazing and after a great game, the USA came out on top and headed to the finals! Finally, on Saturday I went to the gold medal match of women’s football (soccer) between the USA and Brazil. This game was especially exciting for me to watch in person because I attended the USA women’s soccer team’s send-off game against Costa Rica in DC! Getting to see this team compete for the gold medal was so much fun. I have never been to a sporting event that had the same level of energy and intensity as this one. Each of the 48,000 people in the stadium were chanting for their team and the excitement didn’t die down once. After a hard-fought game, the USA won the gold medal! Something else that was exciting about this game was getting to watch the medal ceremony afterwards. This was such a full circle moment for me. From watching USA team captain Lindsey Horan speak to the full crowd in DC about how ready they were to make the country proud during the Games to watching them win the gold medal felt like a great way to cap off my amazing time in Paris. I am so grateful for all of the events I got to see while in Paris. Learning about the behind the scenes of the games through the speakers and lectures has been very insightful and interesting. However, having this knowledge while going to attend the main events made me appreciate all of the work that goes into the Games ten times more.
More Updates from Paris!
It’s hard to believe this is the last week of being in Paris. Since my last post, I have worked two additional shifts at the USA House and even got to attend as a guest. The night I attended as a guest was very exciting. The major event that night was the Women’s Artistic Gymnastics All-Around Final, so they had the event being shown on their TVs in the main room. Being in a room full of other Team USA fans during such an exciting event was a feeling I will never forget. The room went wild when Simone Biles was awarded her gold medal, and it was just an experience I know I would not get anywhere else in the world. As for my shifts, I have continued to work the front gate and get to know guests who are coming into the House or are interested in coming into the House. I have also helped show guests around on the inside.
Outside of the USA House we have attended a lot of guest speakers and lectures. So far, we have met with past Olympians, lawyers, representatives for OnLocation (the official ticketing partner for the 2024 Games) and even a representative from the NBA. So far, my favorite lecture has been with OnLocation. I enjoyed hearing about how their ticketing process works compared to other distributors the Olympics have used in the past. OnLocation makes a very unique hospitality experience for each event of the Games and learning about how they want to approach the 2026 Winter Games and the 2028 Summer Games was very interesting. I luckily got to attend an event since my last post. I went to see Italy play the Netherlands in women’s volleyball, which is what is pictured below! The arena was very easy to get to, the security and ticket lines were smooth and quick, and the game was made very entertaining by both the announcers and the entertainment that took place between each set. There were also some pre-event activations that were taking place in the entrance of the arena. I even got to see the mascot in person again! After 3 sets, Italy won the match, which made me very happy as an Italian.
Reviewing My First Few Days in Paris
I am enjoying my first week in Paris so far! Being in the city during the Opening Ceremony was amazing. Although I was not physically at the event, the excitement the whole city had felt like you had a front row seat no matter where you were. I joined a couple friends at a local restaurant to celebrate the Opening Ceremony where watched it on TV and celebrated with some locals! It was great getting to meet and hear from people who live in Paris about their excitement. The next day we were able to visit the Seine River, where the Opening Ceremony took place. Luckily a lot of the bleachers and decorations from the event were still there so we got to see it in person. Although the first official day of events was rainy, that did now slow down the spirit of the city. We visited La Terrasse Des Jeux, a celebration spot put on by Paris 2024 situated next to Hôtel de Ville, where fans gathered to watch the day’s events. The entire area was packed with a line waiting to get into the outdoor space. Equestrian was on the giant TV screen which was something I have not watched before but was very cool to see! After that we visited a merchandise store to find some Paris 2024 shirts and other souvenirs. Outside of the store we were able to “meet” the Olympic mascot, the Phryge!
Yesterday, I worked my very first shift at the Team USA House. Here, I had the opportunity to stand outside of the house and help direct guests inside. I also helped answer guests’ questions. The morning started off by helping with a private event being held at the House. In the afternoon, the house opened to the general public who purchased tickets to get inside. I had the opportunity to work at the front gate again and loved seeing the excitement of both American guests and French guests excited to visit inside. Below is a picture of me during my first shift at the USA House. I’m looking forward to the other shifts I have and excited to see what roles I am assigned to.
Krista’s Pre-Departure Thoughts
In two days, I will be leaving for Paris for the 2024 Paris Olympics! I am still processing that I have been offered this amazing opportunity and am so grateful to GW for this experience. As someone who has always enjoyed watching the Olympics growing up, I am so excited to have a front row seat to the action during my time in Paris. I am most looking forward to volunteering with Team USA at the USA House. I am looking forward to bringing USA pride to Paris!
I have already learned so much about the Olympics and Olympic history during my time in this course. Having the opportunity to listen to our professors and their past Olympic experiences has been amazing and I cannot wait to have similar experiences myself. Last week, I also had the opportunity to attend the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team’s send-off match against Costa Rica in Washington, DC. Watching the game felt surreal knowing that this same team will be representing USA in Paris. Listening to team captain Lindsey Horan express her excitement for the upcoming Games just made me even more excited for what is in store in Paris!
I have never been to France before, so I am of course excited to immerse myself in cultural experiences as well. During our down time I hope to see iconic landmarks, such as the Eiffel Tower, and try new restaurants in the city. While I know Paris is already beautiful, I am interested to see how they have transformed the city for the Olympics. Maybe one day I can return to Paris again to compare the city during and outside of the Games! Something else I am looking forward to is meeting new people, both those who have traveled to be in Paris for the Olympics and locals. I am looking forward to hearing their stories about what the Games mean to them and what motivated them to travel from different places for this historic event. I cannot wait to make lifelong memories as well as develop personally and professionally.
I have added a photo of the Eiffel Tower decorated with the Olympic Rings. I am so excited to see this in person!
